Good practice when working with trans and non-binary young people

A good practice guide for those working with young people, to help them be inclusive of those who may be trans or non-binary, or those who are questioning their gender identity.

This resource belongs to the resource hub for classroom and wellbeing support.

This short guide is split into three main sections, with emphasis on different ways staff can support young trans or non-binary people.

  • Everyday practice - looking at more general gender inclusive actions to take, including using language thoughtfully and providing gender neutral options for facilities
  • Providing support - looking at things to consider when a young person is exploring their gender or transitioning, including respecting their chosen name, creating a supportive environment and let the young person take the lead
  • The wider setting - policies, education and training that support young trans or non-binary people people
